His brother Albert served in France as a Private in The Royal Berkshire Regiment and Labour Corps. He survived the War.

Served with the Grand Fleet. Died from broncho-pneumonia 22 February 1916 at the Royal Navy Hospital, Gosport. Buried in Winchester (West Hill) Old Cemetery (GR 42-3. 16208.). No Winchester memorial found.

Killed in Action 7 June 1917 when the 15th Hampshires suffered 41 killed and missing while lying out to avoid the barrage before zero hour at 03.10am. Commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ypres (Ieper), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (PR Panel 35.). No Winchester memorial found.
