Son of the late Rev. Archibald Campbell Maclachlan, Patron and Rector of Newton Valence, Alton. Born 24 July 1872 at Newton Valence. Educated Cheam School and Eton, then Sandhurst. Married Elinor Mary Trench (née Cox), widow, of Rookley House, Kings Somborne in 1908 in London. Enlisted in 1895 and served in the Boer War. Wounded 6 January 1900 at Wagon Hill. Took part in the ‘Thibet’ Expedition of 1904 and received the medal. Adjutant of the OTC at Oxford; honorary MA. Served on the Western Front during the War and was promoted in June 1915 to Lieutenant-Colonel. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order in June 1916, both reported in The London Gazette (see below). Mentioned in Despatches twice and was wounded 30 July 1916. Killed in Action 11 August 1917 near Ypres by a sniper. Buried in Locre Hospice Cemetery, Heuvelland, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (GR II. C. 9.). Memorials at St Matthew's, St Paul's and Newton Valence.

He had two brothers who served in the War. Herbert R. served in the Hampshire Yeomanry, then the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Sydney W. served in West Africa, Salonica and Serbia in the Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport) as a Private. He was promoted to Lance-Corporal. Both survived the War.

In 1911 was a Serjeant in The Hampshire Regiment, living at Colonel Moberly’s. He died 8 May 1917. Buried at Winchester (West Hill) Old Cemetery (SQ.38.G.2787). Memorial at St Bartholomew's.

A Bricklayer’s Labourer in 1911. Re-enlisted at Winchester under his mother’s name Marshall, entered again, see above, as Marshall. First went to France 23 August 1914. Served in France and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1915 and the Russian Order of St George (4th Class) posthumously. His DCM citation is below. Wounded 7 May 1915 at Boulogne and Died of Wounds 12 May 1915. Buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France (GR VIII. C. 28.). Memorials at St Cross Chapel and St Thomas’s.

He had four brothers who served in the War. William served in France as a Trooper, commissioned as Lieutenant and Quartermaster with the Hussars. Bertie served in France as a Trooper, then Lance-Corporal in the Hussars and then in the Coldstream Guards, and was wounded 5 December 1915. Stephen served as an Able Seaman in the Mercantile Marine in 1907. Later aboard HMAS Panama. Ernest served in France as a Gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery. They all survived the War.

Enlisted in June 1916 at Saint John, New Brunswick. According to the WWSR he served in France in the American Legion, however this seems unlikely. He was a Canadian National. Served in the Canadian Infantry. He had bronchitis in December 1916 but was pronounced fit for duty later that month according to his army medical records. Wounded 15 July 1917. Killed in Action 8 August 1918. Buried in Wood Cemetery, Marcelcave, Somme, France (GR A.2.). Memorials at St Matthew's, St Paul's and St Thomas’s School.

Buried at Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq (GR XXI. M. 18.). Memorial at St Bartholomew's.
His brother Cyril F. served in Egypt, Palestine and Syria in the Hampshire Yeomanry, the Hussars and the Staffordshire Yeomanry. He survived the War.
