Enlisted 11 June 1913, his 14th birthday, as a Boy having previously been a Baker’s Boy. Served on HMS Impregnable, Colossus and Bulwark. Killed in Action 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland while serving on HMS Black Prince which blew up and sank with no survivors. Memorial on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, (PR 13.). No Winchester memorial found.

In 1911 he was a 2nd Lieutenant 1st Bn The Norfolk Regiment, stationed at Malplaquet Barracks, Churchill House Staff House, Aldershot. Served in France. Wounded 24 April and taken prisoner by Germans. Died in Thulin Hospital, Belgium 28 April 1914 and was buried in Thulin New Communal Cemetery. His grave is lost and he is now commemorated on the Kipling Memorial at Cement House Cemetery, Langemark-Poelkapelle, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Memorial at Christ Church.
