Educated at Marlborough College, Wiltshire. Arthur enlisted in Winchester, August 1914 and served in Flanders. Attached Royal Field Artillery, (OC, Trench Mortar Batteries, 3rd Div.). Listed in The London Gazette 29 August 1914 to be Lieutenant. As 2nd Life Guards, Lieutenant A. W. Gale, Reserve of Officers, to be temporary Captain, dated 9 May, 1915. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Mentioned in Despatches 1916. Killed in Action 10 April 1916 while flying as an observer: reported alive but wounded when the plane came down, but ‘riddled’ with bullets and dead by the time comrades reached the aircraft. Buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (GR V. A. 26.). Memorial at St Thomas’s.

Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Germain of 10, Parchment Street in 1881. Born 1873. Elizabeth, widow, 1, St John’s Street, 1901. Enlisted in The Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire Regiment) in 1893 and served in the Indies. His Canadian attestation papers of 28 September 1915 state that he served thirtenn-and-a-half years with the Wiltshire Regiment. Gained certificates in musketry and gym as well as his general education certificates. Previous to enlisting he had been an apprentice for two years. His attestation papers list his trade as grocer and state that he was married, and belonged to the active militia. The Toronto Star states that he worked as a messenger for ten years at the head office of the Dominion Bank and that at the time of his death he had a three year old son. Re-enlisted in 1914 according to the WWSR but more likely1915 and served in France in the Canadian Infantry. A newspaper at the time reported him as leaving Toronto as a Serjeant-Major in June 1915 and being commissioned in the following January in England. The Toronto Star reported that he had been ‘severely wounded in the chest and left hand on June 8th.’ [1917]. Died of Wounds July 1917 at Calais. Buried in Calais Southern Cemetery (GR Plot B. Row Officers. Grave 5.). Memorial at St Michael’s.
