Son of the late John Newby and Annie Eliza Goodenough (formerly Newby) of 1, Ashley Terrace, Gladstone Street. Born at Kilmeston, 12 July 1892. An apprentice Hot and Cold Water Fitter in 1911. A Whitesmith when he enlisted in 1912. Served aboard the Queen Mary in the North Sea. Killed in Action 31 May 1916 at the battle of Jutland. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Portsmouth (PR 19.). Memorials at St Matthew's and St Paul's.

Transferred to The Warwickshire Regiment. Wounded in April 1918 and Died of Wounds 13 April 1918. Buried at Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Harelbeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (GR II. D. 11.). Memorial at St John the Baptist.

Buried at Valenciennes (St Roch) Communal Cemetery, Nord, France (GR V. E. 20.). Memorials at Holy Trinity, St Matthew's, St Paul's and Bighton (D. Norgate).
