Formerly a Drayman when he enlisted in 1913. Served on the North Sea, the Salonica campaign and France aboard HMS Paragon. Killed in Action 18 March 1917 off Dover when on the Dover Patrol a radio intercept led to the challenging of ships which turned out to be German destroyers. They sank the Paragon with depth charges. There were ten survivors. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial (PR 26.). Memorial at Holy Trinity.

Served in France, Belgium. The promotion to the rank of Lieutenant is dated 28 December 1915 in The London Gazette. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Bar and the Military Cross and Bar. Transferred from The Northamptonshire Regiment and was wounded October 1914. Died of Wounds 29 May 1918. Body recovered and buried in the newly opened Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, Pas de Calais, France (GR VII. A. C. 12.). Memorials at St Paul's and St Thomas’s School.

He took over command of his battalion when his colonel had become a casualty, and led them with great skill to their objective, twice changing direction in order to avoid hostile barrage. He then made a personal reconnaissance and ascertained the position of the enemy, after which he formed a defensive flank, and was able to re-establish his line when it had been driven back by determined hostile counter-attacks. He remained perfectly cheerful throughout, showing a fine example of fearlessness and contempt for danger.’

He was a Canadian National who enlisted in March 1916 at Saskatoon, Sask. Served in France and Belgium. Embarked June 1916 for England and arrived on the Western Front in August 1916. He was transferred from the 65th Bn in July 1916, and rose to rank of Serjeant in March 1917. Wounded in the back 6 (or 7) May 1917. Returned to the front and was Killed in Action 21 August 1917 at Lens. Buried in Villers Station Cemetery, Viller-au-Bois, Pas de Calais, France (GR IX. F. 19.). Memorial at Christ Church.
