Enlisted in a Lancashire Regiment in May 1904 and transferred to the Royal Navy in August 1904 according to his Army Service Record. Naval Record says he signed up for twelve years on 4 January 1905. Served with the Grand Fleet in the Mediterranean during the War. Died of influenza, 5 October 1918. Buried in Gibraltar (North Front) Cemetery, Gibraltar (GR E. 4048.). Belonged to the 36th Regiment militia at the time of his enlistement in August 1914 or September 1914 and served in France. Killed in Action 25 July 1916 ‘while attached 1st Brigade wiring party, and at work in a sap at the ?Bleft, Ypres, at about 10pm on July 25th 1916 he was killed by an enemy mine which exploded directly beneath the party’. His brother John M. served on the Home Front as a Private in the Army Service Corps and survived the War.

He had two brothers who served in the War. Cecil served in the North Sea as an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy. Walter John served in the North Sea and Russia as a carpenter, promoted to Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. Both survived the War.
