Son of George James and Emily Dennistoun (née Russell), of Peel Forest, Timaru, New Zealand who visited Britain in July 1914 and lived in Winchester, where they had been married 1n 1888 at St Bartholomew’s, Hyde by Rev. Stephen Bridge, Emily's relative. Also had a Compton address. They died in Hampshire, buried in Torquay, Devon. Malvern College 1898-1901, House 4, Modern wing (rather than Classical), house prefect. Noteworthy mountaineer in New Zealand; joined Captain Scott's Terra Nova expedition ship 1911-2. In the War left Wellington NZ c 28 February 1915: arrived England 14 April, stayed in Winchester. Considered the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, but they were not about to go to France. Enlisted 2 June at Antrim in the North Irish Horse; transferred to Hemel Hempstead, Herts., then to the cavalry school at Netheravon, Wiltshire, where also visited the flying school.Went to Ireland and enlisted at Antrim in The North Irish Horse on 2 June. Went to France January 1916 with The North Irish Horse. and wrote about his intention to join the RFC. Transferred to Royal Flying Corps (cousin Herbert Russell already a RFC pilot) c.8 June 1916. On 26 June was observer-gunner in aircraft flown by Herbert Russell. Shot down near Arras; Dennistoun (shot and seriously wounded) and Russell (wounded in crash) both taken prisoner. Died of Wounds, 9 August 1916 at Ohrdruf, Thuringia. Buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Hesse, Germany (GR IV. H. 2.). Memorials at St Matthew's and St Paul's (‘Dennistown’), and in New Zealand.
His brother George H. served on Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi), Central Africa (the first naval engagement of the War) and previously in Samoa. A Commander in the Royal Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Service Order 1916 and survived the War.

He had three brothers who served in the War. Alfred served in France as a Private in The Devonshire Regiment, and transferred to the Royal Engineers. Charles served in France as a Private in The Hampshire Regiment. Richard served in Egypt and India as a Private in The Hampshire Regiment, transferred to the Labour Corps and was wounded 9 April 1918. All three survived the War.
