Served at Gallipoli (Dardanelles) with the 10th (Service) Battalion The Hampshire Regiment and was Killed in Action on the 10 August 1915, days after landing on the peninsula. Commemorated on The Helles Memorial, Turkey (PR 125-134 or 223-226 228-229 and 328). Memorial at Holy Trinity.

Eldest son of Alexander Hugh Baring, 4th Baron Ashburton and Lady Leonora Ashburton. Born at Piccadilly, London in 1873. His father had died in 1889. Joined the Coldstream Guards in 1897 and saw service in the Boer War with the 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards. Promoted to Major during the War he fought at Belmont, Modder River, Dreifontein and Johannesburg. In 1901 he was seconded for service with the Foreign Office. He married Olive Althea Smith of Biddesden House, Andover, in 1903 and they had Simon Alexander Vivian born 1906 and Amyas Evelyn Giles born 1910. Guy Baring became Member of Parliament for Winchester in 1906. In 1911 recorded as Member of Parliament, aged 38. He rejoined his regiment on the 6 August 1914 two days after Britain declared war. Served on the Western Front, mainly in France. Mentioned in Despatches twice and was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on the 2 October 1915. Killed in Action 15 September 1916 on the Somme, while leading leading the first battalion attacking German trenches SE of Ginchy. Buried at Citadel New Military Cemetery, Fricourt, France (GR II. A. 9.). Memorial at Peter Symonds School, a plaque in Winchester Cathedral.Also commemorated at Northington and at Ludgershall, Wiltshire. His brother also served in the Coldstream Guards during the Boer War.

Wounded twice and then in March 1917 he was taken prisoner by Turks. Died a prisoner of war on 12 November 1917. Buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq (GR XIV. B. 22.). Memorial at St Cross Chapel.
His younger brother Cyril Henry served in Mesopotamia as a Lance-Corporal in The Hampshire Regiment, was wounded in March 1917 and survived the War.

Married in 1910. Served at Gallipoli (Dardanelles) and Palestine from 27 July 1915. Mentioned in Despatches twice and received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Died of exposure on 11 August 1919. Buried in Sheerness (Isle of Sheppey) Cemetery (GR A. 40). No Winchester memorial found.
Four of his brothers joined up before 1914 and all four saw service in the First World War; three of them survived.

Married to Mary Ann Bellinger. He had three brothers, see below. Father of Mrs Mildred Pollock (formerly Bellinger) of 14, Devonshire Avenue, Brantford, Ontario. Apprenticed as a Tailor to a Mr Cooper for five years before joining the army in 1897. Served in the Boer War during the Relief at Ladysmith and other campaigns with the 1st Bn Rifle Brigade. Permitted to live in Canada from 1906 and enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1907. Re-enlisted in 1914 and served in France. Killed in Action 8 January 1915 at St Eloi. Buried in Voormezeele Enclosure No 3, Belgium (GR III. K. 3.). No Winchester memorial found.
Several brothers joined up before the War. His brother Jesse served in the Royal Naval Air Service. Brother Leonard served as a Private in The Rifle Brigade and brother Reginald served as a Staff Serjeant in the Army Ordnance Corps. All three survived the War. Is Andrew, listed above, was killed.

Listed for this award in the June Supplement of The London Gazette. Fatally wounded on 4 November 1918 he died shortly after. Buried in Awoingt British Cemetery, Nord, France (GR III. C. 9.). Memorials at St Michael's and St Thomas’s School.
Victor's brothers also served. Alfred served at Gallipoli (Dardanelles) and France as a Private in The Rifle Brigade, Machine Gun Corps and His Majesty's Transport (Aragon). William served at Gallipoli (Dardanelles), Egypt and Palestine as a Corporal in the Army Service Corps. They are listed in 1911 as living in 11, Highfield Villas, St Cross, when he was 29, and in 1913 they had a son Kenneth A. Bogie. Enlisted in The Hampshire Regiment in Winchester, 1914. Served with the 1st/4th Battalion in Mesopotamia, where he was Mentioned in Despatches and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Taken prisoner by Turks at Kut he died after months in captivity on 22 September 1916 at Yarbaschi. Buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq (GR XXI. R. 21.). Son of John and Charlotte Burnett of 88, Wales Street in 1911. Born 1889. A Bricklayer in 1911 aged 22. Enlisted at Hamilton Camp, September 1914. Served in the Persian Gulf and landed in Mesopotamia March 15 and was Killed in Action 5 July 1915. Buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq (GR II. R. 7.). Memorial at Holy Trinity.
His brother John served at Gallipoli (Dardanelles) as a Private in The Hampshire Regiment, was wounded 12 August 1915 and survived the War.

Married Frances Marion Bauman in 1906 and they had two children by 1911, Doris Rose and Cecil William, at 9, St Swithun Street. A Tailor Maker in 1911, aged 26. Enlisted in Winchester, November 1915 and served on the Western Front. Wounded 19 December 1917 and Died of Wounds 21 December 1917 at Rouen. Buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France (GR P. V. D. 7B.). No Winchester memorial found.

BURTON, Albert Thomas, Stoker 1st Class, K/17109, HMS Queen Mary. Royal Navy, d. 31 May 1916 aged 22.
Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Burton of 4, Westgate Lane. Born 23 March 1894. A Bottle Washer/Brewer in 1911, aged 18. Enlisted in December 1912. Served on The North Sea on HMS Queen Mary and was Killed in Action 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial (PR 17.). Memorials at St Thomas’s Church and School.
Three of his brothers served in the War. Ernest served in the North Sea as a Stoker in the Royal Navy, Henry served in Mesopotamia and India as a Lance-Corporal in the Hampshire Yeomanry and The Hampshire Regiment and William C. served in the North Sea, Baltic and Falkland Islands on HMS Princess Royal, Royalist, and Cornelia as a Stoker in the Royal Navy. All three survived the War.

A Shop Assistant in 1911, aged 25. Enlisted in Winchester, March 1915. Served in France and Belgium. Formerly 9151, The Rifle Brigade. Wounded 8 August 1917 and gassed in 1918. Killed in Action 2 October 1918 at Ypres. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (PR Panel 138 to 140 and 162 to 162A and 163A.). No Winchester memorial found.
